We could think of a million and one things in the world to be worried about. Whether we'll pass our exams. Whether we'll make it to college on time. Whether the guys will love the new hairstyle. Whether we'll make it home in one piece. Whether our parents will be proud of us. Whether their relationship will last. Whether our relationships will last. Whether we'll find true love. Whether we'll be happy.
But instead we choose to think about this : Whether we'll be noticed?
We try so hard in this life to make ourselves known to as many people as we can. Like a light flickering among many dim ones, that tries its hardest to make itself shine brighter than all the rest. It seems scary now, that we may just somehow be born with our souls so bright, and slowly we fade because we pay attention to the fading light, or somehow we forget that it's there. Every moment of our lives is spent trying to make people remember you for some reason or other, possibly for someone special and unique.
But why ... why this urge to be remembered? Why this everlasting aim to be noticed?
Why are we so obssessed with not fading away?
We only have one life, one life to ... live a dream. To make a difference. To induce change. To feel happiness. To deal with pain. To wallow in sorrow. To be worshipped. To be contemplated. To be obsessed with. To be loved. To ... make an impression.
So that long after your passing, you'll still be revered by people who didn't revere you at all, but a version of you? First of all, it's not even you their worshipping. It's who they want you to be. And, what difference does it make in the afterlife that you are still thought of? You won't even know it, because you would either have joined the universe or returned to life again, and possibly ... revering yourself along with the rest of the herd?
So we've figured it out then. We want to know that we can move on from person to person, population to population, world to world, knowing that somehow we have made them remember who we are and what we were there for. Maybe not to the extent of total worship, but nevertheless we could stay in a place in their minds.
We have no idea why we are here, and what we are doing in this life. We could be mini-experiments for the higher alive powers controlling us, so they can analyse the results and possibly create a whole new - improved world. Or we could simply be the last of our evolution, waiting for our time bomb to explode.
And maybe the only chance we have of making this enigma worth anything - is to leave an imprint.
As long as we're not ignored.
